True Attraction Begins in the Mind

Recently, something happened that made me stop and think about where attraction really begins.
It wasn’t with someone who immediately took my breath away because of how they looked. It wasn’t the obvious, instant kind of attraction that so often dominates our attention.
Instead, it started with a conversation.
There was something about this person’s thoughtfulness. Their curiosity. The way they asked questions. The way they listened. The way our conversation unfolded naturally, leaving me thinking about them long after it had ended. It’s very rare for someone to occupy those moments when we are not together.
That, to me, is where true attraction begins.
In the mind.
Attraction and Connection Are Not the Same Thing
There are countless attractive people in the world.
Beauty catches our attention.
It makes us stop.
It makes us look.
But attention and connection are two completely different things.
The question isn’t what catches someone’s eye.
The question is:
What keeps someone’s attention once the novelty wears off?
For me, it has always been conversation.
Curiosity.
Humour.
The feeling that someone genuinely wants to understand another human being.
Those are the things that stay with me.
Curiosity Is Beautiful
I’ve realised that the people I’ve been most drawn towards haven’t necessarily been the people I wanted to tear the clothes off immediately.
They’ve been the people who made me curious.
The ones who challenged the way I thought.
The ones who taught me something without ever making me feel small.
There is a huge difference between teaching and lecturing.
I have no interest in being spoken down to.
But someone who shares knowledge with enthusiasm, simply because they love what they’re talking about…
That’s incredibly attractive.
Passion is contagious.
Curiosity creates chemistry.
Presence Is Becoming Rare
We live in a world where our attention is constantly being pulled elsewhere.
Phones vibrate.
Notifications appear.
Endless scrolling competes for every spare moment.
Sometimes I wonder whether we’ve forgotten how to simply sit with another person.
To listen.
To ask another question.
To be genuinely present.
Real presence has become something of a luxury.
Perhaps that’s why it feels so memorable when you find someone who gives it freely.
Why I Love Longer Dates
People often ask why I enjoy longer dates.
The answer is surprisingly simple.
Time changes people.
The first hour is often filled with expectation.
The second begins to soften.
Eventually the performance disappears.
Conversation becomes easier.
People relax.
Personalities emerge.
That’s when I feel someone begins to reveal who they really are.
Those are the moments I enjoy most.
Beyond the Surface
This is probably why I’ve become more selective over the years.
Of course physical attraction plays its part.
We’re all human.
But if that’s the only thing holding two people together, it rarely lasts very long.
What I value is someone who is genuinely interested in getting to know me as a person.
Not simply the image they first saw online.
The best experiences I’ve shared have never been built on appearances alone.
They’ve been built on conversation.
On laughter.
On curiosity.
On leaving one another thinking,
“I’d really like to know more about this person.”
Because, for me, that’s where attraction truly begins.
Not with the eyes.
But with the mind.
